GATE — the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering — is India's national-level entrance test for postgraduate engineering and science programmes, and a direct recruitment route to major public-sector companies. It is conducted jointly by IISc Bengaluru and the seven older IITs on a rotating basis, with the organising institute changing every year. What a GATE score unlocks

M.Tech/MS/PhD at IITs and IISc via COAP — The Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) manages offer rounds from 23 IITs and IISc. Candidates apply separately to each IIT, then use COAP to accept, retain, or reject offers across rounds. COAP accepts scores from the last three GATE cycles.
M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan at NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs via CCMT — The Centralised Counselling for M.Tech (CCMT) manages seat allotment at NITs, IIEST Shibpur, IIITs, and CFTIs. It uses a choice-filling and seat-allotment model and also accepts scores from the last three GATE cycles. The CCMT portal is stable at ccmt.admissions.nic.in.
PSU recruitment — More than 30 major public-sector undertakings — including IOCL, NTPC, ONGC, PGCIL, HPCL, BPCL, GAIL, NPCIL, and AAI — shortlist candidates directly on GATE score. Application windows typically run February through May after the result. Safe scores for major Maharatna PSUs run 820–850 or above on the 1000-point GATE score scale.
MoE fellowship for GATE-qualified M.Tech students — GATE-qualified candidates admitted to GATE-approved M.Tech programmes are eligible for a Ministry of Education monthly stipend (approximately ₹12,400/month). Confirm current rates and conditions with your admitting institution.

Frequently asked questions

Can I appear in two GATE papers in the same year?

Yes, subject to the officially permitted two-paper combination list. You choose a primary paper, and the secondary paper must be from the allowed pairs for that primary. Is there an age limit for GATE?

No. GATE has no upper age limit. The only age-related condition is the minimum-age requirement set by your degree programme's normal eligibility rules.

Do PSU recruitments use the same GATE score as admission?

Yes. PSUs use the GATE score and scorecard from the same result. Each PSU runs its own recruitment notification, and eligibility criteria, score thresholds, and branch requirements vary by organisation. There is no single central PSU hub — each organisation publishes its own notification on its careers portal.
