GATE Two-Paper Combinations: Which Papers Can You Take Together?
GATE allows you to appear in two papers in the same year, subject to an official permitted-combination list. You choose a primary paper, and only specific secondary papers are allowed for each primary. The combination rule is directional — Paper A allowing Paper B does not automatically mean Paper B allows Paper A.
There are approximately 70 directional permitted pairs in the current combination list. Two papers have no allowed second paper: MN (Mining Engineering) and TF (Textile Engineering and Fibre Science).

The combination list is published fresh each year — do not rely on a previous cycle's list. Popular pairs include CS + DA, ME + XE, EE + EC, and several others.

Does a two-paper GATE score help with PSU recruitment?
PSUs recruit for a specific branch or discipline, so they use the score for the paper relevant to the role. Your second-paper score may open additional PSU opportunities if that paper is in scope for the PSU's recruitment branch.
Why is the CS + DA combination popular?
Computer Science and Data Science & AI have overlapping syllabus content, and the DA paper opened in 2024 with immediate demand from tech and AI-adjacent M.Tech programmes and some PSU roles. Many candidates use both scores to maximise M.Tech options.
