The single most misunderstood number in GATE is the score. GATE raw marks (out of 100) and GATE score (out of 1000) are two different things — and the score, not the raw marks, is what colleges and PSUs use.

The GATE score is calculated using a normalisation formula that adjusts for variation in difficulty across the multiple exam sessions. For papers conducted in a single session, no inter-session normalisation is needed, but the score is still scaled to 1000. This means a raw mark of 60/100 might translate to a score of around 700–800 on the 1000-point scale, depending on the topper's raw mark and the normalisation result for that paper.
