GATE 2027 registration deadlines move to September 27 and October 5

As of August 31, 2026, for the GATE 2027 cycle: the application timetable has shifted again. Confirmed — official source, checked August 31: the regular registration deadline is now September 27, 2026, while applications with a late fee are listed until October 5, 2026. The application-rectification window is scheduled for October 14–21, 2026. The exam dates remain February 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, 2027. Candidates should use the revised dates on IIT Madras’s GATE 2027 Important Dates page, not older screenshots or coaching calendars.

## What changed from the earlier schedule?

Confirmed — official source, checked August 31: the earlier timetable listed regular registration until September 21 and extended registration until September 30. The current page shows those dates struck out and replaced by September 27 and October 5. The page also currently displays the GOAPS opening date as TBA, with earlier dates struck out. This is important because many reports still describe the previous August 27 opening timetable, while the live application system and the current deadline table are not presented identically on every page.

Reported — India Today, published August 14, 2026: IIT Madras postponed the registration start date and linked the change to the year’s new application arrangements, including DigiLocker integration and live facial verification. Confirmed — official source, checked August 31: registration for Indian nationals requires a verified DigiLocker account, and the application process can fetch details such as name, date of birth, mobile number, address and verified identity information from DigiLocker. The official required-documents page also says that a live photograph may be captured during registration.

## Who is affected?

Confirmed — official source, checked August 31: the revised deadlines apply to every GATE 2027 applicant, including Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics, Chemical, Instrumentation, XE, XH and XL candidates, as well as working professionals and re-attempting candidates. The change is especially relevant to candidates dealing with the revised 2027 paper structure: Robotics and Automation (RA) is new, Textile Engineering and Fibre Science is now represented as XE9 within Engineering Sciences, and several XE, XH and XL sectional codes have changed.

Confirmed — official source, checked August 31: candidates may select up to two papers only from the permitted combinations and must make that choice carefully in the application. A candidate who has already generated the application PDF cannot freely edit the submitted data immediately. The official FAQ says that permitted changes such as paper, city or category changes are handled later, against additional payment where applicable, and that the dates for some such changes may be announced separately.

For a TF candidate, this means the application is not simply a routine paper-code update. Confirmed — official source, checked August 31: TF is no longer listed as a standalone GATE 2027 paper on the current paper map. Such candidates should read the XE structure and XE9 instructions before submitting the form. Similarly, XH and XL candidates should not assume that last year’s sectional labels still apply.

## What you should do now

1. By September 27: submit the complete application without waiting for the late-fee period. This is the financially safer deadline for candidates re-attempting GATE or managing a limited preparation budget. 2. Before submitting: verify your DigiLocker identity details, especially your name and date of birth. Confirmed — official source, checked August 31: the name in the application must match the valid photo ID that you will produce at the examination centre. 3. Check your paper choice: compare the current GATE 2027 paper and syllabus pages and the two-paper combination table before payment. Do not rely on GATE 2026 combinations, particularly for RA, EC, IN, XE, XH, XL or XE9-related choices. 4. If necessary, use October 14–21: the official schedule lists this as the application-rectification period. Do not treat it as a guaranteed opportunity to repair every mistake; permitted changes and additional fees depend on the applicable rules. 5. Save proof: download the submitted application PDF and payment acknowledgement. Then monitor your application status through GOAPS, because the official FAQ says applications can move through payment, scrutiny, defect rectification and acceptance stages.

Confirmed — official source, checked August 31: the examination itself remains scheduled across six days in February 2027, and the result is listed for March 19, 2027. The expanded six-day schedule means more papers may be conducted in multiple sessions, but the official sources checked for this post do not yet provide a session-wise normalisation analysis.

Unverified: we could not confirm any further registration extension beyond October 5, 2026. If you do nothing by that date, you will have missed the currently published GATE 2027 application window.
