GATE 2027 paper combinations updated: RA, EC and IN candidates gain options

As of August 12, 2026, for the GATE 2027 cycle, IIT Madras has updated the paper information for candidates choosing two GATE papers. The most important change is the addition of new combinations involving Robotics & Automation (RA), Electronics & Communication Engineering (EC) and Instrumentation Engineering (IN). The update matters most to interdisciplinary candidates and to anyone reusing a GATE 2026 application strategy. Do not rely on an old combination table when registration opens on August 14, 2026.

Confirmed — official primary source, checked August 12, 2026: The current GATE 2027 two-paper combination table lists these relevant options:

| Primary paper | Newly useful or expanded option shown for GATE 2027 | |---|---| | RA — Robotics & Automation | CS, DA, EC, EE, IN or ME | | EC — Electronics & Communication Engineering | CS, DA, EE, IN, PH or RA | | IN — Instrumentation Engineering | BM, EC, EE, ME or RA | | EE — Electrical Engineering | DA, EC, IN, PH or RA | | ME — Mechanical Engineering | AE, CS, DA, IN, NM, PI, RA or XE |

The table also confirms that RA is now a selectable GATE paper, while the current official test-paper and syllabus page identifies XE9 as Textile Engineering & Fibre Science within Engineering Sciences. That page also shows the revised sectional codes: XE0–XE9, XH0–XH6 and XL0–XL5.

Reported — Times of India, July 28, 2026: The Times of India report said IIT Madras had revised the information brochure, updated the Biotechnology syllabus and expanded selected two-paper options. It specifically reported that RA could be paired with EC and IN, and that EC and IN candidates could select RA as their second paper. The report said the examination schedule and eligibility rules were unchanged.

The official portal now confirms the combination table itself. However, we could not find a separate official notice dated July 28 explaining the revision history in plain language. For that reason, the existence of the current combinations is Confirmed, while the explanation of why the table was expanded is Reported, not independently confirmed.

## Who is affected?

RA pioneers: If you are preparing for the new Robotics & Automation paper and your background is electronics, electrical, instrumentation or mechanical engineering, the updated table gives you more flexibility. For example, an Instrumentation graduate considering control systems may now examine IN + RA, while an ECE candidate may consider EC + RA if both syllabi match their preparation capacity.

EC, EE and IN candidates: These branches often overlap in signals, systems, electronics, control and electrical fundamentals. The new combinations may help cross-discipline candidates target a second paper, but a second paper is not automatically an advantage. It means another syllabus, another paper fee and a possible second exam session or centre arrangement in the same city.

Mechanical candidates: The official table lists ME + RA and ME + XE among the permitted choices. A Mechanical candidate interested in automation should compare the full RA syllabus with the ME syllabus before selecting both. Do not assume that overlap in names such as “control” or “mechanics” means the preparation workload will be small.

Biotechnology candidates: The official syllabus page carries a specific note to check the updated BT syllabus. This is a separate action from checking paper combinations. BT candidates should download the current syllabus rather than continue with a GATE 2026 topic checklist.

## What you must do before applying

1. From August 14, 2026, open the GATE 2027 application portal and select only a combination listed on the current official table. 2. Decide which paper is your primary paper and which is your secondary paper. The official table is directional: it lists the permitted secondary paper for each primary paper. 3. Check the revised syllabus for both papers, especially if you are choosing RA, BT, XE, XH or XL. 4. Use one application only. The official syllabus page states that candidates adding a second paper should add it to the original application; multiple applications can result in only one being accepted and the others being rejected without a refund. 5. Save a PDF or screenshot of the combination and syllabus pages you used on the day of registration.

The official table says that combinations not listed are not allowed during the regular and extended registration windows, although additional combinations may be opened later. It also warns that the secondary paper may be scheduled at a different centre in the same city. If you do nothing and submit an old or incompatible pairing, you cannot assume the application will be accepted as planned.

Bottom line: This is not a cosmetic table edit. It changes the available route for RA, EC, EE, IN and ME candidates planning an interdisciplinary attempt. Check the current table before registration opens on August 14, 2026, and make your paper choice from the live IIT Madras pages—not from a coaching PDF, an old screenshot or a GATE 2026 guide.
