GATE Exam Day Guidelines: Admit Card, What to Carry, and Centre Rules

GATE is a computer-based test (CBT) conducted at designated centres, so exam day has its own rules that are separate from your subject preparation. What to do on GATE exam day

  1. Carry your admit card and a valid original photo ID — Print a clear copy of your GOAPS admit card and bring an original photo ID of a type listed on the admit card (such as Aadhaar, Passport, Driving Licence, PAN, or Voter ID). Verify the authorised ID list on your admit card.
  2. Reach the centre before the reporting time — The admit card lists a reporting time earlier than the exam start. Arrive in good time to clear identity verification and frisking without rushing, which also settles exam nerves.
  3. Leave prohibited items behind — Physical calculators, mobile phones, smart watches, and electronic devices are not permitted in the exam hall. Do not bring them, and confirm the exact prohibited-items list on the official portal beforehand.
  4. Use the on-screen virtual scientific calculator — GATE provides a built-in virtual calculator in the exam software; you cannot bring your own. Practise it in advance using the official mock tests so its layout and behaviour feel automatic under time pressure.
  5. Read the on-screen instructions and check your paper details — At the start, verify your name, paper, and that the question palette is working. Note which questions are MCQ, MSQ, and NAT, and remember that only MCQs carry negative marking.
